Lord knows we hope that you are fired, or reassigned soon. You have no business running the athletics department when its clear that you dont want Pough, Carter, or anyone who knows what they are doing, to succeed. But even if somehow you do slither your way out of this mess you created, you still have no credibility. No alumni are going to give as long as you are there. No real improvements will be made. We cant even get pictures of the improvements that ARE being made. No corporation is going to sponsor anything as long as you are in charge.
Sadly, we know that all to be true. What is even sadder is we know THATS WHAT YOU WANT. As long as the expectations are low, you dont have any pressure on you. You want the program to be average, with butt kissing coaches and staff that will only do exactly what you say instead of having creative thoughts and ideas to advance the department. Dr. Cooper doesnt seem to realize that most of our alumni never wanted you to have that job, and none of us think you are doing a good job. But somehow, you convinced Cooper to give you another year.
In an athletics department that has run a deficit every year you have run it, it is mind boggling that he renewed the contract of a lady who is already retired, and dont know what she is doing. Unexplainable that he would hire a whole new cabinet EXCEPT for your position. Former players are lining up to say you are doing a horrible job, and coaches would too if they didnt fear retribution. None of your staff thinks you are doing a good job. Ask them. We have. The only reason some support you is because they know that as long as you are in charge, they can continue to be slackers just like you. The mediocrity is sytemic. And you are the cause. You are the cancer that that is killing our athletics department. That causes us to lose good coaches. That causes bad coaches to seemingly never get fired. That causes us to still have a high school weight room, and a joke of a softball field.
Everyone has a cross to bear. Charlene Johnson is the cross that the athletics department, and anyone who supports it, bears. And its the worse kind of cross. Its the kind that weighs heavy, but is invisible. Its not bad enough that she does a bad job, but she gets in the way of anyone else who does a good job, or tries to. If she would just let people do their job without getting in the way, the department would be 50% better right away.
The real question is, why would she stifle and cripple the athletics department of her own alma mater? Why would she cripple coach poughs program, which generates more money than any other in athletics? Why is she so upset that Pough is well known and liked? Why does she choke the life out of Carters basketball program, when she herself played basketball at SCSU?
The answer?
Because Charlene is a selfish person who does not care about the success of the athletics department. She is so subpar at her job that she wants everyone else to look average so she doesnt look like the fool she is. She wants SCSU athletics to be back at the middle of the pack, because you actually have to WORK, and be INNOVATIVE, to lead the pack. She doesnt want to work. She wants to sit back in her office, duck interviews, and collect hre paycheck for another year, while doing as little as possible. We wish that the coaches that we have spoken to, from almost every sport, would go public with their feelings. We wish her staff would go public with their stories of how inept she is. But they all have families to feed, and to quote one we spoke to just yesterday in orangeburg, "we dont want to get cut like evans and harrison. They had too many ideas about how to move forward, and you see what happened to them"
What kind of culture does it breed when you have to be afraid to do anything smart because your boss isnt able to do the same. She never would have fired mackey if presseure had not been put on her. Sources inside the department say that she actually wanted to RENEW her contract instead of firing her. She never would have fired JB, no matter what he did or didnt do with a trainer. She never would have hired Carter, the 2nd time. She doesnt want people around who have seen it done and run the right way. She wants people like Mackey and JB, who will be so beholden to her because she gave them jobs that they didnt deserve, that they wont "rock the boat"
Well, the boat needs to be rocked. And she needs to be thrown overboard. PLEASE! PRESIDENT COOPER. SCSU BOARD OF TRUSTEE MEMBERS, SCSU ALUMNI, GOVERNOR SANFORD. PRESIDENT OBAMA. SOMEONE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!!! PLEASE JUST REMOVE HER FROM THE ATHLETICS DIRECTOR POSITION! LET SOMEONE ELSE RUN IT FOR JUST A LITTLE WHILE!! THE COACHES MORALE IS HORRIBLE. PLAYERS MORALE IS HORRIBLE. ALL OF THIS WILL CHANGE IF SHE IS GONE.
AS WE HAVE SAID BEFORE. PRESIDENT COOPER. IS CHARLENE JOHNSON BEING IN CHARGE WORTH ALL OF THIS? WHY WONT YOU MAKE A CHANGE? IS IT THAT YOU DONT KNOW, OR DONT CARE? WE HOPE ITS THE FORMER, AND YOU REALLY JUST DONT KNOW.
