RALEIGH, NC - Left off the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's All-Star team despite being one of the league's top scorers, South Carolina State's Marie Reid poured in 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to power the seventh-seeded Lady Bulldogs to a 66-45 victory over 10th-seeded Bethune-Cookman Tuesday in first-round action of the MEAC Tournament at the RBC Center.
Reid, a transfer from the University of Memphis, only played 25 minutes in the contest in earning her third double-double of the season.
Junior Janell Moore added 15 points, 13 in the first half, and a game-high 12 rebounds in the Lady Bulldogs' victory, which moved Coach Tonya Mackey's team into Wednesday's quarterfinal match-up with second seeded Coppin State, beginning at 12:30.
SC State, which climbed to 13-16 on the season, also got six points each from Brittany Baity, Sophilia Hipps and Rasheeda Jones.
The Lady Wildcats, who defeated S.C. State 54-53 March 1 at Daytona Beach, ended their year at 6-24.
Traci Fountain of Hartsville, SC, had 10 points to lead B-CU. Natasha Ferguson added nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds, and Jalisa Isaac seven points.
The Lady Bulldogs led by as many as seven points in the first half, but had to score the final two baskets of the period for a 37-33 edge at the break.
Mackey's team started the final stanza with a 14-2 run that gave the Lady Bulldogs a 53-35 lead when Reid scored her 10th point of the second half with 9:26 remaining. The closest B-CU, which was held scoreless for 9:42 after scoring a basket with 18:58 left in the second half, came after that was 16 points.
"During the season, we struggled in the second half of a lot of games," said Moore. "So we knew we had to step it up for the tournament. Today, we played two halves. Getting off to the quick start in the second half helped.
"Also, we felt we had to stop their shooters and contain their post players, especially Ferguson. And, our team made an effort to rebound hard after every shot."
Mackey said she was a little worried when the Lady Wildcats made a run near the end of the first half, scoring seven straight points to deadlock the game at 33-all when Fountain scored on a follow shot with 2:22 left in the period. Mackey took a quick timeout.
"They (B-CU) did a good job in making that run," she said. "I thought we had a breakdown near the end of the half and took a timeout to regroup. Both Marie (Reid) and Janell (Moore) had two fouls and they are the meat of inside game and we were out of synch at little."
After the Lady Wildcats pulled into a 33-tie, Moore got two inside baskets to send the Lady Bulldogs to the locker room up four at 37-33.
In looking ahead to Coppin State, which defeated SC State 65-51 Feb. 9 in Baltimore in their only meeting of the season, Mackey said her team had a big task ahead.
"Coppin State is a very tough team?the name speaks for itself," she said. "(Rashida) Suber and (Shalamar) Oakley are very tough guards on the perimeter and Coach (Derek) Brown's inside play has improved as well. We will have to do some things differently from the last time we played them."
